4 Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair Before It Breaks Down

4 Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair Before It Breaks Down. Heating Central Gas Furnace Issue. Technician Trying To Fix the Problem with the Residential Heating Equipment.

Here in Texas, you probably spend most of the year cooling off with air conditioning.

Indoor heat? You likely don’t give it much thought until overnight temperatures begin to drop, and then you turn to your furnace for comfort, hoping it runs smoothly for another winter.

Let’s face it, nothing ruins a cozy evening in Boerne faster than a furnace that quits unexpectedly. The good news? Your furnace is pretty “vocal” about its health. It will try to tell you it’s struggling long before it actually breaks down.

At Beyer Air, we are here to help you become a top-notch interpreter of furnace-speak. We’ve been in and out of basements, utility closets, and attics for years and have seen the same furnace red flags repeated over and over from San Antonio to Bandera, Rockport, and surrounding communities.

In This Guide:

  1. Strange Furnace Noises (Bangs, Squeals, and Rattles)
  2. Unusual Smells (When to Leave the House)
  3. The Burner Flame Color Test
  4. Short Cycling and Uneven Heating
  5. Is There a “Repair-Free” Furnace?
  6. How Maintenance Prevents Breakdowns

1. Why Is My Furnace Making Noises?

A healthy furnace has a steady hum that can be almost inaudible. If yours starts making a cacophony of unpleasant, jarring, loud noises, it’s time to pay attention.

Bang and Boom: You may hear these sounds, indicating delayed ignition, at the start of a cycle. Gas builds up and creates a loud bang or boom when the flames finally ignite.

If left alone, these small explosions can damage your heat exchanger, posing a significant safety threat. Our experienced technicians clean the burners and inspect the ignition assembly when we detect booming and banging.

Squeal and Screech: Your blower motor or a frayed fan belt is crying for help. We resolve the problem by lubricating the motor bearing or replacing the belt.

Rattle: Typically, this refers to a loose panel, but it can also indicate a failing motor. You can check to see if any external panels are loose and then tighten the screws. If the sound persists, call Beyer Air Conditioning and Heating for assistance.

2. Why Does My Furnace Smell Funny?

That dusty smell you notice when you turn on your furnace for the first time in the fall is normal. That is the odor of the unit burning off settled dust. Typically, it dissipates within a day. On the other hand, other smells are major red flags.

Rotten Eggs: This is the scent added to natural gas. If you detect this smell, leave your house immediately. Don’t use your cell phone, tinker with the thermostat, flick switches on and off, or take any other action that could spark an explosion. Once outside and safely away from your home, call your gas provider and the fire department. Then call us.

Metallic or Burning Plastic: This can indicate that electrical components are overheating or the heat exchanger has cracked. We use specialized combustion analyzers and infrared cameras to find cracks or electrical “hot spots” that could lead to a fire.

In the meantime, check your air filter. A clogged filter causes the motor to work too hard, which can result in a burning smell. Replace the filter if it is dirty or clogged.

3. What Color Should the Furnace Burner Flame Be?

Take a look at your furnace’s burner flame and note its color.

The flame should be a steady, crisp blue. If it’s flickering yellow or orange, it’s a sign that the gas isn’t burning completely, a condition known as incomplete combustion, which is a primary source of carbon monoxide (CO).

There is no DIY fix for this issue. Our certified technicians adjust the fuel-to-air ratio and ensure the venting system is functioning correctly, keeping your family safe from carbon monoxide poisoning.

4. What Is Short Cycling and Uneven Heating

If your furnace turns on and off every five minutes or so, it is short cycling. An overheated heat exchanger or a faulty flame sensor can cause this erratic behavior.

If one room feels like a sauna while another feels like a freezer, you are experiencing uneven heating, which typically results from issues with the ductwork or a failing blower.

We can perform an airflow “static pressure” test to see if your ducts are the culprit or if the furnace itself is struggling to push air.

Before reaching out for help, ensure all your air supply and return vents are open and move any furniture, drapes, or other blockages. Also, try swapping the batteries in your thermostat.

Is There a Repair-Free Furnace?

At Beyer Air Conditioning and Heating, we frequently hear this question: “Is there a brand or model that never breaks?”

The simple answer is no. Regardless of the brand, every furnace is a complex machine with moving parts, sensors, and high-heat cycles. Expecting a furnace to never need a repair is like expecting your vehicle to go without new tires or an oil change for years.

However, high-end models are built with higher-grade components that tend to withstand wear and tear much better than budget units. As one of the top 25 Lennox dealers in North America, we are proud to recommend furnaces in the Dave Lennox Signature® Collection, and the Elite® and Merit® series.

Avoid Breakdowns with Maintenance

Annual maintenance is the secret to avoiding breakdowns.

During a furnace tune-up, our professionals clean components and lubricate moving parts. We check electrical connections and venting, and inspect the heat exchanger for safety hazards. Along the way, we notice minor issues that, if left unaddressed, can develop into significant  problems, ultimately leading to a breakdown.

In addition to preventing future breakdowns, maintenance restores energy efficiency. With heating being the most energy-intensive and costly system in your home, you want to ensure your furnace is operating at peak efficiency.
